Archibald Thorburn was born in Lasswade, Edinburgh on the 31st May 1860. A Scottish artist and animal painter and bird Illustrator, painting mostly in watercolour.
He regularly visited Scotland to sketch birds in the wild, his favourite haunt being the Forest of Gaick near KingussieĀ in Invernesshire. Thorburn was a leading illustrator for many high-profile wildlife publications of the late 19th early 20th century. He widely reproduced images of British wildlife and with their evocative and dramatic backgrounds, are enjoyed as much today as they were by sportsmen and bird lovers of a century ago.
Thorburn regularly exhibited works at the Royal Academy and was elected vice president of the RSPB in recognition for his services. Thorburn works remain highly sought after today by private and corporate collectors.
