Allen Tortice was born in North Yorkshire in 1948. He grew up within a mining family in the heart of the industrial northeast. He is one of eight children and was educated at the local village school. Like his father, Allen left school and worked down the mines. He later studied engineering at Wakefield College, but left to join the Army where he won the cross rifles for marksmanship on the first shoot!
Allen held his first solo exhibition in 1987 and went on to hold a number of successful exhibitions across the UK including Leeds and Harrogate.
Allen has always been drawn to the industrial landscapes of the north. Allen believes our industrial heritage is disappearing fast. He tries to capture these distinct landscapes before they are lost forever. Allen has developed his own style of painting, allowing him to express the atmosphere of the industrial landscape, which is so familiar to him. The stark reality of his subject matter is contrasted by its nostalgic charm and the method of its portrayal.
Allen has a keen interest in poetry, which is sometimes inscribed on the back of his paintings. The poems and paintings take us back through much of Allen’s childhood experiences and of those who grew up around him.
