Henri Verge-Sarrat (1880-1966)

was born in Anderlecht, Belgium 15 July 1880.  He worked as a painter and engraver in mediums such as oils and watercolours.  Sarrat’s favoured subjects were landscape scenes of France and Belgium.  At the Salon of the Society of independent artists and engravers, he exhibited mainly French landscapes, the region of Seine-et-Marne along with the more intimate scenes of Tournay.  Sarrat’s passion for plein air painting took him on numerous trips across Europe and as far as North Africa.  He was noted by his peers for vibrant colour and depth, with a real sensitive and spontaneous approach to his work.

Awards and Honors included, The Price of engraving 1912. Gold Medal, World Exposition 1937 and Officer of the Legion of Honor, the decree of 27 February 1954

Following his death in 1966 a special tribute was held from the Autumn Show 1967 Andre Dunover de Segonzac wrote: “I liked the man and admired his work. He is an artist of great class that disappears. His work is pure and true, his art is high. He had a deep sense of life.
